Type of Tool SAS Macro
Title Mixed Effects Binary
Programmer/Email PeterBacchetti, RossBoylan
Contributing Site UCSF
Description This macro analyzes binary outcomes and tests for the possibility that each case has an unobserved random effect. This is standard logistic regression augmented with a case-specific random intercept, as would be appropriate for clustered observations, for example. The macro estimates the variance of the random intercept and tests the null hypothesis that the variance is zero (i.e., that there is no random intercept). The test is a likelihood ratio test, modified to account for the fact that zero is at the boundary of the range of possible values for the variance [REFERENCE: Stram DO, and Lee JW. Variance-components testing in the longitudinal mixed effects model. Biometrics 50, 1171-1177, 1994].

This is a mixed model, because it combines user-specified fixed effects with a random intercept.

Currently, the macro does not create publication quality output.

You should check the SAS log to confirm that the model converged properly. To improve execution speed and convergence, this macro uses starting values defined as the estimated coefficients from same model but without the random intercept.
