Title Practicing Community-engaged Research
Topics Description This explores the history of NIH recognizing issues relating to the fact that while the U.S. is a leader in biomedical research, there is gap between research and clinical practice. In fact, the U.S. health outcomes are worse compared to other industrialized nations. The U.S. has a communication gap between medical researchers and community concerns and needs. This explores how researchers can engage with the community, and how the community can engage with researchers to address health issues in the community. This is an equitable partnership also known as Community-based Participatory Research (CBPR) to address community health issues (i.e., diabetes). This presentation covers all the steps involved in establishing a collaborative partnership between researcher(s)/community. Identification of a problem; developing a research plan to secure funding; drafting the proposal together; developing a full partnership in development; implementation; intervention or data collection; collecting and analyzing the data; reporting the results. This describes how to work through challenges and learn the strengths that community partners can bring to the table in developing surveys that are sensitive to different cultures within the community. In addition community members have networks (i.e., churches; retirement homes) that researchers do not have.

Comments: Excellent presentation that explains how researchers can practiceCommunity-engaged Research.
